Dechoker Saves 32nd Life During Choking Emergency

A 74-year-old care home resident in Spain has become the latest choking victim whose life was saved by the Dechoker, an anti-choking device that can be used for choking first aid on anyone 12 months old and up, regardless of illness, disorder or other health-related condition.

According to staff at Residencia San Agustín, a retirement home in Logroño, Spain, the resident was eating an orange when she began to choke. Staff performed the Heimlich maneuver and chest compressions but say neither was effective. That’s when they decided to use the Dechoker to try to remove the obstruction. In their official report, Residencia San Agustín officials say a large piece of orange was removed during the first attempt with the Dechoker, and that the resident began to breathe and regained consciousness. The resident was given oxygen and was back to baseline condition in just a few minutes.

This most recent incident brings the total number of lives saved by the Dechoker to 32.
